The Siskiyou Arts Museum opens its third year of celebrating art, music, drama, literature, and film with The Annual Members Show in the SAM gallery space at 5824 Dunsmuir Avenue in Dunsmuir through the months of February and March. The public is invited to the festive Opening Reception on Friday, Feb. 13, from 5 to 7pm.
The Member’s Show celebrates the work of artists and craftspeople who are SAM supporting members in a juried, invitational show. All SAM members have been invited to submit one to three pieces of art or handcrafted work for this fabulous show and sale! This is a wonderful opportunity to collect the work of local artists and help support the Siskiyou Arts Museum.
SAM is also the only art museum in Siskiyou County, with continually changing exhibits of historical artwork and artist retrospectives.. Since SAM’s opening in March of 2013, the museum space has featured retrospectives of well-known local artists including Anne Kinkade, MaryAnn Kickerpill and Sherrie Russell Meline. An amazing display of original 18th Century prints by William Hogarth graced the museum in the summer of 2013, while art honoring Dunsmuir legend Grant Tauhindauli was displayed last year.
And if that’s not enough, SAM is often hosts performances and events open to the public. The ever popular Rumi’s Caravan poetry performance filled SAM’s lovely space in May of 2013. Jazz was heard during Jazz in the Canyon. The popular holiday dramas “Scrooge” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” were performed by by New Frontier Theater in December. SAM sponsors the annual Dunsmuir ArtFish program, where artists create and display colorful fish on Dunsmuir lamp-posts. Films, classes, and concerts are offered throughout the year, as well as opening receptions for new art exhibits every Second Friday.
The first three years for a new non-profit organization are the most challenging and can be the most rewarding. The Board and volunteers of SAM donate their efforts to enrich our community. Volunteers run the gift shop, host the shows and events, arrange and solicit the art, pay the bills, clean the floors, and keep the doors open. Help us celebrate their achievements, and the fine artwork of SAM members, on the evening of February 13th. All openings are free and open to the public.
