June 4, 2017 — Denim Painting Workshop

Fabulous fun!

Sunday, June 4th, from 1;00 to 4;00pm, Siskiyou Arts Museum (SAM) will give a workshop on painting blue jeans.  WHY?
Almost everyone has a pair of denim trousers, a jacket, a skirt, and maybe more. Probably some of these have seen better days.   Clothing made of denim has become an American fashion icon.  Denim was designed to be almost indestructible and marketed to be worn for manual labor.  The original indigo-dyed pant made mostly for men has become a staple for women and children as well.
Most jean wearers have discovered that blue jeans fit better when they have been worn and washed a few times.  And they wear so well that people hate to throw them out even if they look a bit dog-eared.  In times past putting patches and resewing tears and holes kept these work horse garments functioning long after their expected life-span.
During the 1960’s manufacturers noticed how popular ‘hippie” garb had become.   Taking new jeans and bleaching. decorating, painting and ripping holes, department stores were able to market them as the latest fashion forward.   Young people loved them but they were expensive and too new to be comfortable.   What did catch on, however, was the DIY (do it yourself) discovery that with holes, splattered paint, words, or designs on their old jeans, there emerged something insanely creative and inexpensive.   Instead of shelling out big bucks for new premium department store denim clothes, perhaps they could  be altered by anyone.  Homemade “do-overs”  became hugely popular especially with teenagers.   Soon the modified denim items were sought by older people and young children as well.  They are colorful, unique and cute.

Siskiyou Arts Museum wants to give the public the opportunity to experience this art form.  For $20, instruction and all  supplies are provided.   Some may want to bring their own denim items to refashion.  However SAM has a large selection of “pre-owned” apparel in many styles and sizes, with some children’s selections too.
People who have questions or want to sign up can call SAM at 235-4711 or the instructor, Penelope Joy at 235-4365.
Space is limited.
