SAM’s hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10 to 5

On May 10th the Siskiyou Arts Museum in Dunsmuir, California will open a two month retrospective of the work of noted African American artist, Raymond Howell. The works are part of a private collection of Howell patron and long time friend, Thamar Wherrit of Mt. Shasta, CA.

Wherrit followed Howell’s career from the time he left his graphic arts job in the early 1960s to devote full time to his art, until his death in 2002. Her collection includes a number of never before seen Howell works including an early pastel that he intended to destroy, and a portrait of Thamar as a young woman that Howell painted to thank her for her willingness to regularly model for him during his early career.

The retrospective will also include memorabelia, personal notes and photographs gathered during Raymond and Thamar’s long friendship.
